"New House" Reno Recap

As I mentioned in the previous post a couple times, we were totally blindsided by the condition of our house when we got possession. A couple hours before closing, we were taking our final walk through, which also happened to be only our second-ever walk through. Our first, and only other time seeing this house we were purchasing was the beginning of May, and the house had really taken a beating in the past few months. I'm not sure it had been cleaned at all since then, actually. I'm also not confident they had taken their dog outside since then either. Yes, it really was that bad.

So, not only did we have to deal with one of the filthiest houses I've ever seen, but instead of the 2 weeks we originally were planning on having to move, we had about 22 hours. 22 hours to move everything we owned into the garage and basement of the new place. (We could only move stuff into those 2 places because every other room was either too filthy or was getting new flooring shortly, and we didn't want our stuff sitting on the vile carpet.) Let me tell you, that was an exciting 22 hours. I'm very thankful for all the help we got from our family and friends - Dads Halleck and Wardell, Al, Tom and Patricia Benson, Randy (for the use of your truck,) Mike and Jared, Allie and Kara, Zach and Khan - thank you all very much. We could not have gotten it all done without all your help. It was nuts.

Home Sweet Home

After getting all our stuff crammed into the garage and basement, we then had to get some serious cleaning done. We even cleaned the stuff we knew was getting ripped out within the next week, simply because the smell was so bad, we had to do something just to stay in there. I was seriously worried we were all going to get some kind of disease by staying in there for extended periods of time. At this point, I would especially like to thank Patricia Benson (again!) and Joyce Hands, our lovely pastor's wife, Kara and Allie for all the hours they spent scrubbing the walls, floors, cabinets and any other hard surface in the house. Although the stench in the house didn't really leave until the boys got all the carpet ripped out, it really did help the condition of the house to get everything scrubbed down. I'm also afraid that if we hadn't repeatedly washed all the walls down before painting them that stuff would have started growing through the paint. Again, yes, it was that bad.

Once we got everything ripped out and up and scrubbed down and over, we thought we were able to start painting. (At the time of this publication, we were not yet finished painting, but maybe someday, we will be. We'll see. I have no desire to ever paint a wall ever again, so someone else may have to finish what is left.) But, alas, things were not to go as planned. Before we were really able to start painting, we had to patch up all the holes all over the house. And there were a lot of holes. Thank you, Tom Benson for spending literally hours and hours mudding up all the holes we discovered the more we cleaned. I actually think the grime that was everywhere actually hid some of the holes. Once all the mud was dried, I discovered that there are very few tasks on the entire planet that I hate more than sanding said mud off of the walls. My arms were so stiff and sore every morning for about 4 days from all the sanding that I would really rather never do that again in any lifetime.

Finally, after days of mudding and sanding, we were able to start priming the walls, which of course had to be done a couple times because of whatever strange paint the previous owners had put on the house. It seemed to absorb everything we put on the walls. Even the off-white walls required 2 coats of primer and at least 2 coats of latex paint. It was intense. At this point, I would like to highly, HIGHLY recommend the environmentally-friendly, zero-VOC paint brands. We used Olympic, but I know of several other brands that make this variety. Because of all the painting we had to do, we would have all been high as kites had we used a paint with fumes, not to mention that I wouldn't have been able to be in the house due to being pregnant. The zero-fume paint was definitely the way to go, and the one room we didn't use it for, we can still faintly smell the paint. And since every single wall in this house needed or needs to be painted, there is no where to hide. Thank you to Mike and Allie, Jared and Kara, Patricia Benson, Holly Benson, Joyce Hands and Sharon Seal for all the help getting our living areas painted.

Exactly one week after we moved our stuff in (not our personages), we got new carpeting for the entire house. But before the new carpeting could be installed, we needed to install the hardwood laminate in the front living room and baby's room. What we thought would be a relatively easy project - of course - ended up taking considerably longer due to the fact that we had to put in all new subflooring, because the subflooring that was there was so bad off and uneven, the hardwood couldn't be installed over it. The house was also so creaky that J and his dad had to spend even more hours rescrewing the floors into the joists. It was quite the project, let me tell you. BUT, once we got that carpet in and the laminate was finished, the house looked SO DIFFERENT it was amazing. My mind was blown. I still look at pictures and think, "WOW." If you didn't see the leopard print carpet before, even the pictures can't properly convey the overwhelming experience of that carpet. You just had to see it in person. But now you can't. Because it's gone. For forever. Thank goodness.

Finally, after owning the house for about a week, we were able to bring Aria over to the house and show her where she'll be spending, hopefully, the majority of her childhood. She was so excited about the yard and back deck. I still think it's one of her favorite parts of the new house, and actually it was one of ours as well. A lot of people have asked us after seeing the house why we decided to buy it. The backyard and deck area were definitely two of the reasons we fell in love with it. The other really nice aspects of the house included a recently renovated kitchen and bathroom and a large basement, which has plenty of space for not only a laundry and pantry area, but also an office.

All in all, it was a looooong 3 weeks of nightly backbreaking work to get our house livable, but it was so worth it. There's still a lot of work to be done - molding to caulk, doors to replace, more walls to paint and decorate, boxes to unpack, shelving to install and many more little projects. But now our house is a home. Aria's toys have taken over our family room, dinners have been cooked on my new stove top, my tea cups and pots are displayed on our bookcases and, thanks to the ever-helpful Mrs. Hands, we have flowers in our front flowerbed. It was hard, but it was worth it.

The Toddler Wars: Episode 3 - Life-Altering Changes and Adjusting to Them

So, I really did have every intention of blogging my way through this move. Which, thinking back, is a very funny thought. I'm not really sure where I thought I would find the time or extra energy to post everyday about our new house. Obviously, it didn't happen. We originally thought we would be moving into our new house within 2 days. Also a very funny thought. The house ended up being uninhabitable, (which will be completely outlined in a later post) and we had to move in with J's parents for a couple weeks. I also spent a long weekend up at my parent's house with Aria, and we finally were able to move in 16 days after we closed. Again, more details on the move and reno will definitely be coming. Just needed to provide some context.

I don't think it's a secret to anyone who knows anything about toddlers that they don't like change. They don't like when their routine changes, especially when it changes repeatedly over the course of a couple weeks. Poor Aria went through a toddler's worst nightmare during this move. Between the old apartment, her Wardell and Halleck grandparent's houses and the new house, she stayed in 4 different houses over 2 weeks. Talk about traumatizing. By the time we were moving into the new house, every time she got into bed, it took her a while to figure out that she was supposed to be sleeping.

She was also not at all used to the fact that not only was J gone all day, but so was I. We spent all day everyday over at the new house trying to get it to the point where we could bring Aria into it. While we were killing ourselves for her own good, she didn't understand at all why we kept leaving her behind. Some days, I would only see her around lunch time for an hour or so, and many of those days, J wouldn't see her at all. It was definitely rough, but all that hard work has really paid off.

Overall, she did really well, however. She's never been one who adjusts to schedule changes well, and we were bracing for the worst. "The worst" didn't really come until the last couple of days, when I think she just gave up on trying to figure out what was going on in her little life. We had a couple major meltdowns towards the end, but really, it could have been worse.

By now, she's pretty much completely adjusted to the "new house," as she still calls it. She is still incredibly clingy when new people come over or when we leave her with a Sunday School worker or babysitter. She gets very nervous if we walk out of the room without letting her know, and it's even worse if we "hand her off" to someone and walk away. Panic will most certainly ensue. In a certain twisted way, it makes me feel kinda loved, but of course it's a stage that we're hoping she outgrows soon. I'm sure her Sunday School teachers feel the same way...

Fashionista on a Budget

Ok, so I'm not exactly a "fashionista." I have never been one who can walk into a thrift store (or any sotre for that matter, honestly) and just put together a fabulous outfit. Unless it's already on the mannequin. Then I am all over that! But I do love fashion and I do love to decorate. A lot. Which is hard when you have nigh unto zero monies. I felt like I did an OK job with what I had when we moved into the apartment, but now we're moving into a bigger home. That means more walls, more rooms and a lot more money. Especially since we'll be replacing the Leopard print carpet immediately. Carpet and flooring aren't cheap, ya' know.

So, I've been spending a lot of time on Pinterest, looking for cheap ideas that look really nice. And since I'm pregnant and won't exactly be able to do a lot of painting or scaling the walls, I need to make it simple, or I'm going to freak out the hubby. I have never been so thankful for Pinterest than when I started looking at my decorating budget and everything that needed to be done.

I thought I would share some of my "finds" on here for those of you in a similar predicament as myself. You can also find everything I've found and loved on my Pinterest board "Decorating on a Budget." Please note, I haven't tried these ideas yet, but plan to in the next couple of weeks. I'll update on which ones work well and which ones were a flop. (To see my post on "Productive Pinteresting" click here.) Another note, not all of these had working links on Pinterest, so I tried to add my own directions. We'll see how that goes lol.

What ideas from Pitnerest have you used to spruce up your home on a budget? Which ones were a bust? Which ones would you recommend? Would LOVE to hear feedback on any of these ideas that you've tried.

I have posted this idea before and can't
wait to try it. She has a great tut on it so
so click here :)

This one didn't have a link or tut
attached, but the pin said it was simply
a piece of wood, padding, pretty fabric
and 4 chair legs you can get at Lowe's for
about $5 each. Sounds easy enough, right?

I'm so in love with this idea, and plan
to do it in our new living room.
Great tut here.

I'm hoping I can use the same concept
from the above large canvas idea
for this sheet music art to put above my piano.

Ikea lamp + sheet music = brilliance.

How to turn outdated laminate
counter tops into a chic granite alternative.
Step by step tut here.

More Decorating for Aria and Her Big Girl Room

It's been a few days since I've blogged, and it's because of all the insanity going on here. We're hopefully and FINALLY! moving this weekend, so I've been busy boxing up things and distracting Aria from the fact that her toys are mysteriously disappearing into boxes which she's not allowed to open. But today, my mom took Aria up to the water park by their house and I have the whole day to myself. I've been Pinteresting and lounging around all day. I know I should be doing laundry or packing up more stuff, but it's so nice to have a little alone time. Anyways, all that to say, I can find time to blog today :)

For Aria's birthday, I wanted to get her something she would actually use and not be just another cast-off toy. She has a lot of those, and I didn't feel like wasting my money on a 5 minute diversion. So when I saw this adorable chair at HomeGoods, I couldn't resist.
Aria's new chair. How cute, right?
And yes, it's a rocker!!
There are fewer things that Aria loves more than sitting in a chair, reading books and rocking. Oh, how she loves to rock. And this chair fits her perfectly, and it's just too cute. I got a good price on it, and knew she would fall in love with it - and she did. How could she not?!

Wall paint idea
But now, I had to rethink my original plans for her room. I posted a couple months ago some inspiration pictures for her "big girl room" and I still really love those. But the lime green didn't really fit in with the teal and pink I had planned. At first, I just decided to switch the color scheme; teal and hot pink are easy to turn to lime green and hot pink, right? Well, after that, a few other ideas started morphing, and now I'm thinking of going an entirely different direction. I have to be really careful, because the room she'll be staying in is quite small, and I don't want to over power it with too much color, or too much going on on her walls. I decided to stick to color on just one accent wall, and it will be a punch of color. What do you think?

Because that wall is quite saturated in color, I'm probably just going to paint her furniture white, although I've been toying with the idea of painting the drawers a different color than the base... maybe a white base with lime green drawer fronts? Still thinking. I'm also going to redo her lamp. It's a pretty lamp and worked perfectly in her nursery, but it will need a face-lift if it's going to fit into her big girl bed.
How cute is this print? It's a bed sheet,
but I'm sure I could turn it into a
lamp shade cover....
You can see the lamp in the background of this picture of her current nursery. >>

The lamp base is going to get a coat of lime green and I'm going to re-cover the lamp shade with some fun pattern in hot pink. Maybe a damask or chevron? We'll see what I can find for cheap :)

Lastly, I'm going to remove the backing of Aria's current white bookcase and Mod Podge some brightly colored scrapbook paper on the back to make it fun and add some more color to the room without overtaking it. I also really want to do a cute and fun window treatment, but since it's been a couple months since we've actually been in the house, I can't completely remember the size/shape of the window in there, so I'm going to wait to make a decision about that until we move in.

I'm thinking about adding some funky Parisian touches as well.

Hobby Lobby's hot pink
Eiffel Tower. Love the airiness
and fun of it.
How cute would a spray-painted metal Eiffel Tower be sitting on a white dresser? Something like this from Hobby Lobby? >>
I may also put some mirrors on her closet doors to make the room lighter and feel a bit bigger.

How do you make your kid's smaller rooms feel bigger while still fitting their personality? I still want her room to be fun for her and place she likes to be, even though it's small.

Mommy/Daughter Dates

The farther I get into this pregnancy, the more I get worried about having a new baby in the house. How will Aria react to a new little one? Am I ready of TWO of these tiny humans? Will I be able to spend time with both of them the way I want to?
Aria chilling at the pool like mommy :)
I've heard these worries are perfectly normal, and I sure hope it is. One of the big things that will change is obviously how much time I'll be able to spend with Aria. While I know that I will LOVE having a new infant to snuggle with, there's still a little bit of sadness that I won't get to spend as much one-on-one time with my baby girl.

In order to ease my guilt about this matter, I've purposefully been trying to do things just with her, or even just spend more time with her during the day. She really does prefer to play by herself when it comes down to it, but if I make an effort, she will eventually include me in whatever she's doing. I especially like sitting in her big rocking chair with her, reading book after book. ("Book after book" is far better than the alternative, same book 137 x's in a row, which also occasionally happens.)
Aria enjoying her monster cookie
from Starbucks

One day earlier this summer, we had one of our special mommy/daughter dates. We had to go somewhere mundane - honestly, I  don't remember exactly where - but I decided to make it special, and took a detour to Starbuck's on our way home. They have these huge oatmeal raisin cookies that Aria just thinks are the bomb. For the duration of this pregnancy, I'm not really allowed to drunk much coffee, so Chai was on the menu for me - another one of Aria's favorites, courtesy of Mimi's spoilings. It was so nice outside, we sat at their picnic tables with our cookies and my Chai, and "talked." It was great. I can't wait till she's older, and we can chat for real. She was so adorable trying to get the chai up the straw and the cookie was bigger than her face.

I plan on taking her to the Detroit Zoo before the summer is up, and we've been taking lots of trips to the pool, just the two of us. Sometimes, I'll take her outside to play with bubbles and run around, and even a trip to Meijer can be a huge event for her, thanks to Sandy the Horse still only costing a penny to ride. It's these little memories that she may never remember, but I'll always have them to cherish. And soon, we'll have double the memories to make :)
